Should you sterilize unwrapped instruments?

Critical instruments may be sterilized unwrapped only if they are for immediate use and are transported to the point of use in a sterile covered container. Semi-critical instruments that will be used immediately may be sterilized unwrapped on a tray or in a covered container, but must be handled aseptically when removing from the sterilizer and transporting to the point of use.

In most cases, it makes far more sense to wrap or place in a sterilization pouch to sterilize instruments as this allows instruments to maintain sterility indefinitely. For questions about sterilization and infection control, contact your Henry Schein representative to schedule training.
